Children in Avalon are once again swinging, climbing and sliding with delight as their much-loved playground reopened this week following a three-month upgrade.

The existing playground was identified as needing a revamp during the early community consultation for the My Place: Avalon project and this was identified as a quick win.

The beautiful design was based on community feedback which identified keeping the existing footprint, introducing nature, and different challenges for different ages as the key objectives.

The new inclusive playground features natural materials such as timber, rope, and sandstone and caters for both young and old children with two play towers giving differing climbing challenges. There are also artistic and interpretive carvings throughout the playground that will be a delight for children to discover.

The site is surrounded by rubber surfacing, a new inclusive swing set including a high-backed seat, a nature play trail area, climbing equipment, a slide, and plenty of places for parents and carers to sit and watch.

A new accessible pathway linking the Bowling Green Lane carpark to the playground makes it easy for parents with prams or those in wheelchairs or with walkers.

While the work was being done, our engineers and landscapers took the opportunity to fix the poor drainage around the site, meaning wet weather won’t hamper the kids’ fun.

So get down and check it out, and while you’re there support local businesses and grab a coffee or snack at the same time.
