Wollondilly Shire Council will be celebrating Local Government Week 2020 from the end of July to early August with a focus on highlighting the wide range of services and activities Council provides.

Held annually across NSW, Local Government Week is designed to showcase the work councils do in their local communities. The theme for this year is ‘Council’s Do.’

Local Government and its many functions are a big part of people’s lives, often without them realising it. From roads, child care centres, libraries, sports fields and cemeteries, to food safety checks, building and development and pet registrations - all these things are looked after by councils.

Mayor Matthew Deeth said, “Local Government Week is always a highlight in the Council calendar.”

“Even though this year we are unable to have our schools visit the Council Chambers, we still have some exciting activities for our school students.”

“This is a great opportunity to highlight some of the things we do and the close relationship we have with the community.”

To mark this year’s event, Wollondilly Council will be distributing a ‘What Council does’ video to  primary school students from various schools across the Shire.

Students will learn how local government operates and hear presentations about road safety, environment services and council facilities.

There will also be a colouring competition for all children within Wollondilly where prizes can be won! The colouring competition is open to children to the age of 12 and will make a great school holiday activity!  You can download the colouring competition from Council’s website, or collect one from both Wollondilly Library & Councils Admin building. Entries must be in by 31 July.

Local Government in NSW looks after more than $136 billion of community assets and has 450 council-run libraries that attract more than 34.8 million visits each year.

NSW councils are responsible for around 90% of the state’s roads and bridges and manage an estimated 3.5 million tonnes of waste each year.

During Local Government Week we invite you to explore the many services your council provides.
