Blue Mountains 7 Feb 2020

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill welcomed the announcement that the NSW Government will oversee the clean-up process for those affected by the recent bush fires, as well as new assistance measures.

The financial cost of the clean-up will be shared on a 50:50 basis between the NSW and Australian Governments, aiming to give people more certainty as the recovery process continues.

The Government has also announced that homeowners, whose homes were destroyed during the bush fires, will have their rates covered for six months. Similar assistance will also be made available for businesses.

Residents and businesses must be registered with Service NSW to access the range of assistance types on offer.

Mayor Greenhill welcomed the announcements, but highlighted the need for a quick and efficient implementation.

“These announcements of additional help are applauded, and I know many residents and local businesses will feel the same,” Mayor Greenhill said. “The rates relief is particularly welcome news, and will provide real and meaningful support to those who are struggling through this difficult time.

“Council is continuing to work directly with our community, and we know the importance of getting the support and financial assistance to those who need it quickly, and these measures need to be rolled out without delay.

“Council will continue to ensure we are implementing every measure we can, and supporting the implementation for the state and federal assistance packages,” he said.

Everyone whose property has been impacted by the bush fires will be able to access clean-up assistance, including the removal of dangerous trees. Additional types of assistance are available depending on the extent of property damage experienced, and individual needs.
