Senior citizens make an invaluable contribution across the entire Tamworth region and in light of Seniors Week, Tamworth Regional Council is taking the opportunity to offer them the thanks and acknowledgment they deserve, through the annual Seniors Week awards ceremonies.

Senior citizens play an important role in community life as a whole. They make up a large proportion of volunteers in varying roles, actively participate on committees and often advocate on behalf of elderly people who need additional support.

Tamworth Region Mayor, Col Murray expressed his thanks to all senior citizens who spend their time helping others in the region.

“The most valuable thing that someone can give is their time. This week we especially acknowledge our senior citizens across the Tamworth region for the time, effort and generosity they provide to others in their day-to-life.

“Your contribution to the community, especially our elderly community, is very valuable and we would like to offer you a formal and well-earned thank you,” said Cr. Murray.

Esme Doolan and Sister Petra Reis were today recognized at the Barraba Seniors Week Awards Ceremony - the third of four celebrations happening across the Tamworth region this week – for their tireless work within the community.

Both Esme and Sister Petra spend countless hour supporting others in the community by volunteering their time to provide comfort, activities and companionship to others, delivering meals and helping those in need.

The Barraba Senior Citizen of the Year for 2019 was awarded to Esme Doolan.

Esme has been a volunteer at Richardson House for over 20 years. She runs the Friday morning ladies craft group, encourages new volunteers to join and assists many residents, a lot of them with dementia to enjoy a quality of life. Esme is happy, delightful and engaging and helps to make the residents feel part of the community and remind them of the skills they still possess.
