Senior citizens make an invaluable contribution across the entire Tamworth region and in light of Seniors Week, Tamworth Regional Council is taking the opportunity to offer them the thanks and acknowledgment they deserve, through the annual Seniors Week awards ceremonies.

Senior citizens play an important role in community life as a whole. They make up a large proportion of volunteers in varying roles, actively participate on committees and often advocate on behalf of elderly people who need additional support.

Tamworth Region Mayor, Col Murray expressed his thanks to all senior citizens who spend their time helping others in the region.

“The most valuable thing that someone can give is their time. This week we especially acknowledge our senior citizens across the Tamworth region for the time, effort and generosity they provide to others in their day-to-life.

“Your contribution to the community, especially our elderly community, is very valuable and we would like to offer you a formal and well-earned thank you,” said Cr. Murray.

Today, the celebrations kicked off with an event in Nundle, the first of four awards ceremonies taking place across the region this week.

Harvey Warden, Charles May and Lynn Leslie were today recognised for the support they offer to the senior community in Nundle. They were acknowledged for the work they do and time they spend on helping elderly people in need, including assisting with Meals on Wheels, escorting people to appointments, providing company and serving on various committees.

The Nundle Seniors Citizen of the Year for 2019 was awarded to Charles May.

Mr May has served on the Health Advisory Committee, the Committee of Nundle Aged Care Units and is involved in the Rural Fire Service. He has also assisted with Meals on Wheels, been a transport driver, and has assisted many seniors by providing information on services they may be eligible for, helping them to access these services.
