The children’s section at Armidale Regional War Memorial Library will scale new heights of fantasy when two local artists create a new mural during the festive period.

Artists David Allan and Fiona McDonald will paint a 15-metre-long dragon mural along the children’s section’s main wall, after parents suggested the space could be more colourful.

“They said the children’s section was a beautiful area but the walls were a little too much grey,” Children’s Librarian Jennifer Watson said.

“When the kids at Story Time said they’d like a mural of a dragon, we knew just who to ask.”

Fiona and David shared the children’s love of dragons and had produced similar illustrations for books and other murals.

“We’ve got dragons in the blood,” Fiona said.

“They live in myth and fantasy, so they’re a perfect subject for a children’s library mural.”

David and Fiona, illustrators for local publishers Christmas Press Books and Little Pink Dog Books, will undertake the mural while the library is closed during the Christmas period.

It will shut its doors at 6pm on Monday 24 December and the artists will begin work on 27 December, with a goal to complete the piece before the library reopens on Wednesday 2 January.

Fiona and David are donating their time and expertise for the project, while the Friends of the Armidale Library are providing the acrylic paints and other materials.
