MEDIA RELEASE 28 September 2018

In a major sporting coup Bathurst has been selected to host a round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup in February 2020, the first time the event has been held in Australia.

The city, along with Shepparton, will each host a round of the UCI World Cup, the world’s premier BMX racing series for elite men and women. The event will be a qualifier for the Australian team for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Mayor Graeme Hanger OAM has welcomed the announcement.

“For Bathurst and Shepparton to host rounds of the UCI World Cup, the first time the event has been brought to Australia, is a huge coup for both our communities.

“Bathurst invested in the construction of a world class BMX facility. This announcement is an endorsement of the quality of the infrastructure we have as well as the city’s ability to host major events.

“Bathurst has previously hosted Oceania and National BMX events at the track. It is exciting to be selected to host a world cup event which will bring the best riders from around the world to Bathurst to compete in the lead up to the 2020 Olympics.”

Cycling Australia CEO Steve Drake said Cycling Australia was very excited to see the announcement of two BMX World Cups in Australia.

“Without the support and encouragement of Bathurst Regional Council and Greater Shepparton City Council, events like this wouldn't be possible. We're also excited that these events will be used as a qualifier for BMX riders in the lead-up to Tokyo 2020."

BMX Australia CEO Martin Shaw said the announcement was a shot in the arm for BMX racing in Australia.

“It is something our community can be very proud of. The efforts of Bathurst Regional Council and Greater Shepparton City Council to procure these world-class events is to be applauded and a just reward for the investment they have made in their wonderful facilities,"
