The City of Canterbury Bankstown is helping local seniors reconnect after COVID lockdowns and health restrictions, as it hosts its biggest Seniors Festival program yet.

People aged 55 years and over are encouraged to take part in the events and activities, with most held face-to-face throughout March and April.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said the past few years of physical distancing and going in and out of lockdowns have been hard on everyone, especially our seniors.

“They’ve been locked away for their health and safety, and there has never been a more important time to reconnect with the community,” Mayor Asfour said.

“Some of the events being organised are exciting, and I truly hope that all of our local seniors come out and try something new.”

There are a more than 60 activities planned at Canterbury-Bankstown’s Library and Knowledge Centres, Leisure and Aquatics Centres, Senior Citizens Centres, Morris Iemma Indoor Sports Centre, Bryan Brown Theatre, Bankstown Sports Club and Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL.

Activities include:

CBCity’s infamous Seniors Festival Concert hosted by Bankstown Sports Club;Bus trips to Kiama and the Nepean Belle Paddlewheeler;Classic Australian movie screenings;Bankstown and Campsie history bus tours;Crafty art workshops; My aged care talks;A table tennis taster session; andMuch more!

The Healthy Body, Healthy Mind workshop on Wednesday 30 March will see CBCity’s first ever launch of Tovertafel, an interactive games console to stimulate the mind and body.

“I can tell you, Tovertafel will be a huge draw card,” Mayor Asfour said.

“The stimulation and engagement, aims to enhance the health and wellbeing of our local seniors while providing them with games they will enjoy.

“This festival is just one of the many ways we can show our thanks to their contribution to the community.”

Tickets for the bus trips go on sale at Campsie and Bankstown Customer Service Centres from Tuesday 15 March. Tickets for the Seniors Festival Concert will also be on sale from Tuesday 15 March at Bankstown Sports Club.
