All Council facilities and streetlights in Canterbury-Bankstown will now be powered by solar energy.

The City of Canterbury Bankstown (CBCity) has finalised a new contract with Australian solar provider, ZEN Energy, which will increase Council’s renewable energy supply from 20 per cent to 100 per cent.

The renewable energy will be supplied from solar farms in Moree, Hillston and Nevertire.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said this was a massive achievement for Council.

“It means that when a resident uses our libraries, pools, sportsgrounds, community halls, or any other Council building, they are using a facility that is powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity,” Mayor Asfour said.

“This is just another step in the right direction in creating a greener Canterbury-Bankstown.

“We are showing our residents that buying renewable energy is achievable for all of us.”

The City of Canterbury Bankstown is one of 25 councils to sign the renewable energy contract, which was facilitated by Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC) and is due to commence in July 2022.

Collectively, the 25 councils represent more than three million people and almost 38 per cent of the state’s population.

CBCity is also developing a Zero Emissions Pathway and will continue to lower overall energy consumption through a range of projects including energy efficient street lighting and improving the efficiency in all our facilities, installation of solar and batteries on our buildings to power our electric vehicle fleet.
