Positioned for Future Prosperity

A new chapter for the Moree Plains Shire began today, with the newly elected Council holding their first meeting and being officially sworn in. At the meeting, Councillor Mark Johnson was elected as Mayor with Councillor Susannah Pearse elected as the Deputy Mayor.

The team consisting of seven newly elected and two returning Councillors have pledged to lead the Moree Plains Shire through the next 2 years and 9 months, a reduced term as a result of the 2021 election being rescheduled.

“Our councillors have an exciting opportunity to work with residents and businesses to make a real difference in the Plains, and I look forward to working with them in continuing to build and support an even more thriving local community,” said General Manager, Lester Rodgers.

The breadth of experience of the elected members of the new Moree Plains Shire Council, and the many talents they bring to the table, provides a diverse range of skills, perspective, and enthusiasm.

“Already, the new Council and staff are gearing up to develop the Community Strategic Plan and the Council’s Delivery Plan to outline what will be achieved during this term,” said Mr Rodgers.

The new-look Council also signals some exciting ‘firsts’ being achieved.

For the first time in Moree Plains Shire Council history, five of the nine Councillors are female, providing a stronger female representation at the Council table.

Councillor Cochrane becomes the youngest member of our Shire elected to Council, while also making history as the first Gomeroi woman.

We welcome Councillor Mekayla Cochrane, Councillor Murray Hartin, Councillor Kelly James, Councillor Mark Johnson, Councillor Mike Montgomery, Councillor Lisa Orchin, Councillor Susannah Pearse, Councillor Brooke Sauer, Councillor Greg Smith into a role that will shape the community now and into the future.
