Burton Street between Broughton Street and Humphrey Place with be closed to traffic for 6 months to create a trial plaza.

Traffic Flow

Part of Burton St will be closed to traffic around the start of August for a period of 6 months.

Vehicular traffic in Burton St will be closed between Broughton St and Humphrey Place (see Legend below).

Purpose of the Plaza

North Sydney Council has received funding from the NSW Department of Planning, Industry Environment (DPIE) "Streets as Shared Spaces Program" to create a trial plaza in Burton Street, Kirribilli.

The trial plaza will be a central hub within the Kirribilli village, providing a place where people can meet friends or sit for a quiet moment in the sun. The space will be a contemporary and creative area, that can be used during the day and in the evening and is suitable for residents and visitors of all ages. The additional open space is expected to attract both residents and visitors to the Kirribilli village.

Council will assess the use of the plaza and the impact on traffic in determining whether the road should be closed permanently. The creation of a permanent plaza in Burton Street is a major initiative in the Kirribilli Village Centre Masterplan.

The trial plaza will be built on sustainable design principles with temporary elements that can be removed and re-used if Council decides not to proceed with a permanent closure at the end of the trial period.
