Have your say Revitalising Balo Street

Moree’s dry and sunburnt main street has the opportunity to be revitalised into a sustainable, artesian oasis making socializing and business ventures a refreshing experience along Balo Street during the hotter months.

Under the NSW Government’s ‘Your High Street’ grant program, up to $1 million dollars is available to local councils to upgrade one and only one main street in an identified strategic centre, Moree is eligible as it is the only strategic centre identified by the Government in this part of NSW.

Moree Plains Shire Council is seizing the opportunity to beautify Balo Street and is calling on community members to complete a survey providing feedback regarding changes or improvements they would like to see.

“This newly announced project funding supports our longer term vision to transform the township of Moree into a green and sustainable oasis of the north west”, explained Council’s Director of Planning and Community Development, Angus Witherby.

“We not only want to refresh our main street, but at the same time we want to enhance the diverse cultural heritage of the Gamilaroi people and reinforce the strong art deco aesthetic that is present throughout Balo Street.

“In the survey community members are invited to make suggestions on how they best believe Balo Street can be enhanced while also provide feedback on the recommendations made by Council’s Urban Advisory Committee.

“The overall aim of the project is to encourage people to come to our streets to work, live and visit.

“This survey is targeted at businesses, residents, community and stakeholder groups local to Moree and designed to ensure Council meets the funding criteria for the grant program”, said Mr Witherby.

The suggestions open for comment from Council’s Urban Advisory Committee for the funding application include:

Misting and additional trellises; Misting sculptural water feature/archways; Islands of trees in the middle of Balo Street towards the end of Albert Street; Water feature monument opposite the Moree War Memorial Hall; and Additional planting of suitable trees.

All suggestions and feedback from community members must be provided through the survey.
