New streamlined rates structure proposed for City of Parramatta

City of Parramatta residents and businesses are invited to provide feedback on the consolidation of the City’s multiple rates structures into a single scheme that applies to the whole Local Government Area (LGA).

The proposal – now on public exhibition – follows the review of the five existing rates structures that were inherited during council amalgamations in 2016. All amalgamated councils in NSW are required to review their rates structures by July 2021.

“By applying a single rates structure across the entire Council area, we are creating a system that’s more consistent for all of our hardworking ratepayers,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said.

“Transitioning to a single method of calculating rates will result in changes for some residents and businesses, so it’s important for us to consult with our local community and get their feedback on these proposed changes.”

The City of Parramatta LGA includes suburbs that were previously under Auburn, Holroyd, Hornsby Shire and The Hills Shire councils, and each had its own rates structure.

“The collection of rates is crucial for Council to fund essential services and infrastructure, such as garbage management, planting of trees, and the maintenance and upgrading of roads, parks and community facilities. This is particularly important for a growing city like Parramatta, so we can continue to meet the needs and expectations of our community,” Cr Dwyer said

“While we are seeking to make our rates consistent across the board, we have also made an effort to come up with a structure that will have the least impact on our ratepayers.”

Changes in rates will vary from property to property based on land values and other factors.

Council will review and consider all submissions before lodging any proposed changes with the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal of NSW (IPART). If the proposed structure is approved by IPART, the new rates will take effect from 1 July 2021.
