City of Parramatta to host concert series in lieu of New Year’s Eve fireworks

City of Parramatta Council has made the decision to cancel its New Year’s Eve festivities this year but will instead kick off 2021 with a special summer concert series.

Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said current restrictions on gatherings meant hosting Parramatta’s much-loved fireworks show was not feasible, and Council’s priority was the health and safety of the community.

“While it’s disappointing that we won’t be holding our New Year’s Eve event and fireworks this year, we are working on an exciting alternative way to celebrate,” Cr Dwyer said.

“The City of Parramatta will be presenting a fantastic series of concerts at unique locations across the City in January, encouraging people safely back into the Parramatta CBD with some incredible live music performances.

“We have been working closely with the NSW Government and relevant authorities to find a way we can deliver smaller-scale events over a few weeks where people can come together in a COVID-safe way.

“The summer concert series will also be a boon for local businesses, who need our continued support after a tough year,” he said.

“We understand how much people look forward to our New Year’s Eve event, but we’ve learnt in 2020 to embrace new things and I’m confident our residents, and the visitors to our great City, will love the special event program. I look forward to sharing more details in the near future.

“In the meantime, I ask that everyone continue to follow the health guidelines this festive period so that we can keep our community protected and have a safe and happy New Year.”
