Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller says proceeds of the sale of the remainder of the NSW Government’s stake in WestConnex should be put towards redressing the historic public transport deficit in Sydney’s South West.

“The people of Liverpool have got a raw deal for too long,” Mayor Waller said. “We have the slowest rail connections to the city and the average Liverpool household spends $608 in tolls every year.

“This is a tax on getting a good job for the ratepayers of Liverpool. We are working hard to keep locals in local jobs, but travelling to the Eastern City for work will always be a reality and poor public transport and financial disincentives for driving are a double whammy.”

Mayor Waller has welcomed the recent commitment by the NSW Government of the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport, but said Council will continue to advocate for more direct train services to the city.

“It takes longer to catch a train into the city from Liverpool than it did in the 1970s and that is not acceptable in this modern age,” Mayor Waller said.

Liverpool City Council has set the agenda for a rapid transit corridor connection to the future airport via Liverpool – the Fifteenth Avenue Smart Transit (FAST) Corridor.

Council believes the future airport will require more than one public transport connection and supports the extension of the South West Metro from Bankstown to Liverpool and the extension of the Inner West and Leppington Line as the most efficient and cost-effective way of connecting the airport site to the existing public transport network.
