Councillor Rowena Abbey re-elected as Yass Valley Mayor Cr Rowena Abbey will continue her eight year tenure as Mayor for another 12 months following the NSW Government’s decision to postpone council elections until September 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cr Nathan Furry was re-elected as Deputy Mayor.

LED upgrade Work to upgrade more than 951 streetlights to energy efficient technology will begin this week as part of a major energy efficiency project that will save hundreds of thousands in electricity bills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The switch to LED technology will see a 185.2 MWh per year reduction in power use, delivering savings of approximately $59,000 each year in maintenance and electricity costs. LED streetlights consuming around 17 watts each will replace existing high-energy lights consuming between 50 and 100 watts. Council is investing approximately $462,000 to complete the bulk upgrade, with the costs expected to be recouped within a period of 7.14 years.

Road reserve weed spraying trial Consideration will be given within the 2021/2022 Operational Plan for annual funding for a Priority Weeds Spraying Program, estimated at $150,000. This follows the success of the priority weeds spraying trial that was completed on Council’s linear road reserve network from April - July 2020. Council also resolved to collaborate on weed management through the advocacy of the Canberra Joint Region Organisation and to seek support for additional funding.

Rural Fire Service declares start of Bushfire Danger Period 1 October is the official start of the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) for 2020 and the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is urging residents in the Goulburn Mulwaree, Upper Lachlan and Yass Valley Council areas to prepare for the fire season now. Residents should prepare their property by removing flammable materials from their yards, clearing gutters of leaves, checking hoses and, where appropriate, conducting hazard reduction activities. Residents are reminded that during the BFDP, Fire Permits are required and can be obtained from your local fire station. Residents must also notify neighbouring land owners and their local fire authority 24 hours prior to burning.

Submissions welcome for Civic Precinct In February 2020, Council endorsed a ‘wish list’ of projects and resolved to undertake planning and design work so the projects would be ‘shovel ready’ in the event of grant funding opportunities. One of these projects is a Civic Precinct, which would include a new library, community rooms and exhibition spaces, long term Government tenants and the retention of Crago's Mill among other elements. Council is keen to understand if the elements for inclusion in the Civic Precinct meet community needs and expectations. Draft 2020 Strategic Plan – Murrumbateman Recreation Grounds At the September 2020 meeting, Council resolved for the Draft 2020 Strategic Plan -Murrumbateman Recreation Grounds to undergo public consultation. Murrumbateman Recreation Ground is a multi-use facility located along the Barton Highway within the main township of Murrumbateman. The facility is approximately 45 hectares in size and includes an equestrian precinct, sporting field, tennis courts, playground, community hall, amenities building, public toilets and passive open space areas. The purpose of the Draft Murrumbateman Recreation Grounds strategic plan is to provide Yass Valley Council and the community with a direction for structured development of the Murrumbateman Recreation Grounds as well as meeting the legislative requirements of the Local Government Act 1993.
