Have your Say Land Use Plan for the future of the Plains

Residents across the Moree Plains have had their say and helped Moree Plains Shire Council develop a statement that sets out the community’s land use aspirations for the next 20 years.

The Moree Plains Shire Local Strategic Planning Statement, which identifies clear planning, land use issues and opportunities in the Shire for the next 20 years, is now on public exhibition.

Mayor Katrina Humphries said the Planning Statement provided a vision and framework to guide detailed land use planning to help the Shire grow in a vibrant, competitive and sustainable way.

“This is an important document which will help Council prepare for the next 20 years. We know our future is looking particularly bright, with works for our Special Activation Precinct starting to take shape in coming months. Construction is scheduled to start for the Narrabri to North Star section of the Inland Rail by the year’s end so there is plenty happening in the Moree Plains.

“This document will ensure that growth happens in a sustainable and consistent way,” Mayor Humphries said.

“A big thank you to all the residents and interest groups who were involved in the extensive consultation required to put together this road map for our future.

“Times have been difficult, but the Shire continues to show its resilience, to grow and to attract infrastructure development and investment.”

All councils are required to have to have a Local Strategic Planning Statement under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act and for the Moree Plains, we aim to:

Be established as the northern regional centre for the North West Region of NSW

Have a thriving and increasingly diverse agriculture industry

Protect local Aboriginal culture and heritage

Maximise the benefits from our location on key road, rail and air transport routes

Develop commercial opportunities related to the sustainable use of water sources

Generate investment and employment associated with the Inland Rail and Special Activation Precinct program at Moree

Have optimal LGA-wide telecommunications services

Realise the tourism potential of local hot artesian water, Aboriginal heritage, Art Deco architecture and agriculture

Have quality local health and educational services
