Fun for young and old at the 2020 Cessnock City Seniors Festival

The 2020 Seniors Festival kicks off on Wednesday 12 February with a bumper program of events and activities aiming to find something for everyone.  A special inclusion in this year’s program is events that bring younger and older people together. Building connections between generations is vital to keeping a community strong and healthy, with both young and old gaining knowledge, skills, understanding and joy from being together.

The Grand Summer Splash is a free pool party for grandparents and their grandchildren held at Cessnock Pool from 9am to 2pm on Saturday 15 February 2020. Hosted by Samaritans, this will be a great day to cool off and have some fun in the water with games, Zumba and a free BBQ lunch provided by the Cessnock Lions Club. Bookings are essential for this event and can be made by calling 4993 3400.

Students of the Cessnock Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or ‘STEM’ Excellence are also involved in the program this year, who will showcase their skills using emerging technology. This is a great opportunity for local seniors to try something new, like coding, robotics or 3D design. This free event will be held as part of the Wine Country Music Association Concert at the Cessnock Performing Arts Centre on Monday 24 February 2020.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said it’s fantastic to see events like these on the program which encourage connections between young and old in our community.

“As a senior myself and former teacher, I always enjoy learning new things from the younger generation and we older residents have a wealth of knowledge to share too.”

“I strongly encourage people to get involved in these events and I hope to see more like this on the program next year,” added Cr Pynsent.
