Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor Peter Beer has thanked firefighters and community members for their ongoing efforts in tackling the numerous bush fire threats throughout the region.

As of midday Wednesday 1 January 2020, there were close to a dozen fires burning in the Snowy Monaro.

It has been confirmed that one property has been lost in the Badja area.

“It’s a difficult time for all residents in the Snowy Monaro and our neighbouring council areas,” Mayor Beer said.

“My thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones in the devastating fires and with those who have had their properties destroyed.

“Once again have seen our communities come together in the face of tragedy. Our resilience will help us through these tough times.

“I urge everyone to stay updated with fire threats by regularly checking the NSW RFS website and by listening to your local ABC station.”

Two evacuation centres are currently operating in the Snowy Monaro. The Bombala Community Centre and Cooma Multi-Function are open 24 hours a day and are accepting people escaping the fire threat.

The Monaro Rural Fire Service will release information later today, advising of a series of community meetings to be held in the Snowy Monaro in the coming days.
