Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller opens the Liverpool Sculpture Walk with Sculpture by the Sea founding director David Handley.

8 December 2019

Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller and Sculpture by the Sea founding director David Handley have officially opened the inaugural Liverpool Sculpture Walk, which this weekend joins Granite Island in South Australia as one of only two satellite year-round exhibitions of sculptures from Sculpture by the Sea at Bondi and Cottesloe in Western Australia.

“It is such a thrill to bring the people of Liverpool world-class public art,” Mayor Waller said.

“We are very pleased to have 10 sculptures from Sculpture By The Sea, which has become such a rite of spring in Sydney, but today we are doing it our way.

“The setting is very different to Bondi. These sculptures are installed along the Georges River at Casula Parklands and there is a wonderful drama in the backdrop that these sculptures complement so well.

“It’s a great experience to admire and interact with the sculptures as you walk with the river by your side.

“These impressive works look like they were always meant to be here.”

Mr Handley said the 10 sculptures represented an “international collection of substance” that is “evolving and growing”.

“At the end of Sculpture by the Sea there are a lot of works that need a home and what better spot. It’s a beautiful location, wonderful riverbank flood plain and gum trees in association with a regional gallery so for the artists it’s spot on.”
