Removing English Holly – a Local Priority Weed

Did you know English Holly (Ilex aquifolium) is a Local Priority Weed?

We all have a responsibility to control this weed, under the NSW Biosecurity Act 2015.

Council has been targeting English Holly at over 180 Council managed sites on public land, throughout the Blue Mountains, since July 2017. We have also been asking landholders to remove this weed from private lands.

The weed is prolific in the upper mountains.

Following consultation with Blackheath community groups and RSL representatives, we will remove the existing hedge at the Blackheath Gardens this week and replace it with a Camellia hedge, sympathetic with the local landscape.

While it may take a few years for the Camellias to grow into a full and intertwined hedge, the first blooms will open late Autumn and last through to Spring.

We can all work together to protect our World Heritage Area.
