Time is running out to recognise our home-grown heroes because nominations for Bellingen Shire’s 2020 Australia Day Awards are about to close.

Bellingen Shire Council Mayor, Cr Dominic King, said that nominations for the Australia Day Awards would remain open until Monday 2 December 2019 and could be submitted online via Council’s Create website or posted and hand delivered to Council’s Bellingen Administrative Centre.

“I am always overwhelmed by the competitive field of nominations we receive across all award categories, and given the calibre of last year’s applicants, I encourage everybody from previous rounds to lodge a submission again because this year could be your year.”

Cr King said the Australia Day Awards provided our community with a fantastic opportunity to recognise examples of outstanding achievement across a suite of categories including Citizen of the Year, Community Service and Community Group of the Year, Sportsperson and Junior Sportsperson of the Year, Sports Team of the Year, Creative Arts Award and Community Event of the Year.

“I think it’s important that we take the time to acknowledge the members of our community who give their time freely throughout our Shire to help others and to recognise those who have demonstrated commitment and excellence in sporting and artistic endeavours.”

Cr King said Australia Day Award Winners would be announced at 6:30pm on Friday 24 January 2020 at the Memorial Hall in Hyde Street, Bellingen.

“The Awards Ceremony will be a community event that will have something for everybody including a Welcome to Country, live musical performances, finger food and light refreshments and a visit by an official Australia Day Council Ambassador.”
