Liverpool City Council is joining children’s charity Variety to build a world-class inclusive playground at Lt Cantello Reserve in Hammondville.

The new playground will allow people of all abilities to play side-by-side in a fun, challenging environment.

Liverpool residents will be able to help design the new playground, with public consultation to begin once a designer is engaged.

“Liverpool City Council is delighted to join Variety on this important project,” Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said. “Variety Livvi’s Place Lt Cantello Reserve playground is a huge win for our community and we know it will benefit families for generations to come.

“Liverpool is home to people from all over the world. One in five of us has a disability of some sort. Diversity is one of our strengths and at the heart of everything Council does.

“Promoting inclusion for people with disability is a core objective for Council. A key part of our Disability Inclusion Action Plan is providing inclusive recreation activities.

“The new inclusive playground at Lt Cantello Reserve will be a place where everyone is welcome; where everyone can enjoy the simple pleasure of being outdoors and exploring what their bodies can do.”

Liverpool City Council is one of four councils (Shoalhaven City Council, Tweed Heads Council, and Newcastle City Council) that received the Variety Livvi’s Place 2019 Design Grant to support the development of inclusive playspaces.

“The Variety Livvi’s Place Lt Cantello Reserve is an exciting part of our mission to make play available to all kids within their community,” Variety CEO David Sexton said.

“We have a dedicated team of inclusive play experts who work alongside councils and community groups to build incredible playspaces, which meet the needs of the community now and into the future.”

Design work for the new playground is set to start shortly, with construction to begin next year.
