COUNCIL NEWS 23 OCTOBER 2019

The 2020 Henry Lawson Festival will be held from the 4 – 8 June 2020 and planning is underway.

The Festival Annual General Meeting (AGM) has been scheduled for 7.30pm Tuesday 29 October, 2019 at the Grenfell Community Hub. Residents are encouraged to attend the AGM and join the committee to assist in conducting the 2020 festival.

With the upgrade of the Grenfell Main Street scheduled for next year there may be a need to relocate the festival event for a year as the Main Street area may not be conducive to conducting an event such as the festival. Council and the new committee will certainly make every endeavour to conduct the event in the Main Street as from a business, economic and social perspective the Main Street is certainly the preferred site to conduct the event.

Residents are encouraged to attend the AGM and join the committee so we ensure the 2020 Henry Lawson Festival is another great success.

Once the new committee is established it is proposed to conduct a festival workshop in the future to assist in the future direction of the festival.

A boost to grassroots sports development or upgrades to local sporting facilities across the Cootamundra electorate are just some of the projects eligible for funding, in the latest round of the NSW Government’s Local Sport Grant Program.

This is a great chance to share in $4.65 million in grants which will bring a huge benefit to the local community and if you have a project that will boost training for coaches, promote grassroots sport or enhance existing facilities you should apply now.

The Local Sports Grant Program closes on November 25, 2019.

The NSW Liberals and Nationals Government is investing $400 million through the Snowy Hydro Legacy Fund to address poor internet and mobile coverage for people living in regional NSW.

This significant investment will aim to bridge the digital divide between metropolitan and regional NSW. Investment in large-scale digital infrastructure is a new area for the NSW Government and represents an incredible opportunity to make sure residents of regional NSW can make a Triple Zero call, study, connect with friends and family, and run a business, regardless of their location. Community consultations will be conducted across regional NSW with  a session to be held in Grenfell as follows:    - 5 November 5-7pm Grenfell Bowling Club Residents are invited to attend this consultation as it will be an excellent opportunity to advocate for better internet and mobile coverage in rural areas and in particular the Weddin Shire.

The Grenfell Aquatic Centre opened on Monday 30 September for the 2019/2020 swimming season.  It is envisaged that the Quandialla Pool will be open on 3 November 2019.

As the weather warms up no doubt these venues will be very popular and it is hoped everyone has a very enjoyable and safe time in our pools this summer.

The new exhibition at the Grenfell Art Gallery is “Earth and Water” by Annie Joseph and Graham Watt.

Annie Joseph’s art is in watercolour, charcoal, pen and wash, and acrylics. She mostly draws inspiration from the landscape around her whether in her heartland of the Central West of NSW or further afield in Portugal, France, Ireland or Scotland!

Graham Watt’s pots are hand formed using pinching and coiling techniques. They are then pit fired using a combination of cyprus pine, kurrajong, sawdust, cow dung, copper sulphate and seaweed. His pots are made from commercial and locally sourced clay.

The Art Gallery is open Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm, Saturday 10am - 3pm & Sunday 10am -2pm.

The next movie to be screened at the Grenfell Cinema will be ‘Yesterday’ on Saturday 9 November, 2019 at 8pm. Please see the adjacent advertisement for further details.
