One of the artworks on the shores of Lake Illawarra in Holborn Park, Berkeley, references old style “clinker” boats.

Wollongong City Council—in conjunction with local artists—has instigated two public artworks on the shores of Lake Illawarra in Holborn Park, Berkeley, and in Haddon Lane, Woonona.

The works, a large artwork of the local Mistletoe Bird and an installation that references the “clinker boats” on the lake, are part of the Public Art program which aims to create interesting and evocative spaces in public areas.

“These works will help to inspire local residents as well as enhance the laneway in Woonona and the park near the lake walkway with views out to Goosebury Island,” Sue Savage, Manager Community Cultural and Economic Development said.

“Council and the local communities have been working with the artists, Col Henry and Kane Horspool [Trait], on the design and placement of their works. The work in the laneway will help to make this area vibrant with a contemporary work showing a local wildlife. While the sculpture on the park on Lake Illawarra will inspire residents and walkers as well as allow people to reflect on the lake and its marine environment.” The artworks are available to view at the above sites.
