The Henry Lawson Festival is over for another year and the general consensus was that the festival was excellent with approximately 5,000 – 6,000 people attending which was absolutely magnificent considering the cloudy weather on the Saturday.
The festival executive, committee, coordinators and all of the volunteers should be justifiably proud of their efforts and ultimate achievement of making the festival a great success. A debrief session will be held on Tuesday 2 July, 2019 with a full review of the festival undertaken to ensure the 2020 festival will be even bigger and better. The committee will now have a well earned break after the debrief meeting for a few months prior to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in October.
While the 2019 Henry Lawson Festival was an outstanding success, the Festival Committee is struggling to find volunteers to assist with the organisation of the festival.
This problem is not unique to Grenfell as many smaller towns are experiencing similar problems. Essentially, the nature of the volunteer has changed as more people are working these days and find it very difficult, particularly if they have young children to find time to volunteer in the community.
In this regard a public meeting will be held to review the Festival, facilitated by Mr Stephen Sykes, on Tuesday 30 July 2019 at 6.30pm at the Grenfell Bowling Club.
Residents are encouraged to attend to have input into the review and the future of the Henry Lawson Festival.
Council recently applied for financial assistance under the ‘2018-2019 Floodplain Management Program’ for the Bimbi Flood Study and was successful.
Funding of $51,428.27 has been granted and accepted. The funding is a 5:1 ratio, where council will fund 1/5 the total cost of the project. A work plan will be submitted to the Office of Environment and Heritage before the 29th July 2019 prior to the study commencing.
Riverina Nationals' MP the Hon Michael McCormack is encouraging rural and regional students to apply for Government-funded scholarships to assist with their tertiary education costs.
Students are invited to apply for scholarships under the expanded third round of the $58.1 million
Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships program. Mr McCormack advised eligible students could benefit from up to $18,000 which could go towards the cost of their university or vocational education.
Regional students face a number of challenges which their city counterparts take for granted. The Liberal and Nationals in Government are ensuring that every Australian has access to a world-class education.
The scholarships cover courses including certificate IV through to a PhD and can offer support to those seeking flexible study arrangements.
All eligible students throughout the Riverina and Central West are encouraged to apply.

Regional and rural students can also access more assistance through the $53.9 million injection to Youth Allowance which is specifically tailored to allow more students in regional Australia to qualify for Youth Allowance.
From 1 July 2019 cat and dog lifetime registration fees will increase in line with the Consumer Price Index as required by the Companion Animals Regulation 2018.
The new fees are:
Desexed animal - $58 Breeder (Recognised) concession - $58 Pensioner concession (desexed animal only) - $25 Pound/Shelter animal 50% discount (desexed) - $29 If the registration fee has not been paid 28 days after the date on which the animal is required to be registered, a late fee of $16 will be incurred. If the companion animal has not been desexed by the relevant desexing age and is not kept by a recognised breeder for breeding purposes, an additional fee of $152 is payable in addition to the applicable registration fee listed above.Further information is available from Councils Environmental section.
Active Farmers in conjunction with Central West Lachlan Landcare are holding a Wellness morning of Yoga & Meditation followed by a light lunch for anyone in the area interested.
This is a free event which will be held on Saturday 22nd June, 2019 from 10am – 12pm at the Caragabal Country Club.

Council recently provided a Certificate of Appreciation to Graham and Deborah Foster in recognition of Gibson and Co’s 37 years of outstanding service and commitment to the Weddin Shire community.
The Certificate of Appreciation was signed by the Mayor and General Manager and presented to Mr and Mrs Foster at a family dinner over Easter.
The new exhibition at the Grenfell Art Gallery is the “Art of Aging” exhibition which will be on display to the 28 July, 2019.
The Art of Ageing is an initiative under the NSW Ageing Strategy 2016-2020 which celebrates the rich and diverse lives of older people living in NSW.
The Art Gallery is open Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm, Saturday 10am - 3pm & Sunday 10am -2pm.
With the Henry Lawson Festival over for another year the next film to be screened at the Grenfell Cinema will be arranged in the near future.
