George Jeffery Park officially named

Last Friday the park formally known as Jeffery Park was packed with passionate family and community members joined together to celebrate the official renaming of the site to George Jeffery Park.

In late 2017 Council received a number of submissions from family members of Sergeant George Jeffery to formally dedicate Jeffery Park, Kearsley to George Jeffery Park.

The name commemorates Sergeant Jeffrey who served in the Australian Army and saw active service in Gallipoli with the 6th Battalion, No. 686. After discharge from the Army Mr Jeffery and his family moved to Kearsley. Mr Jeffery was a tireless worker for the Kearsley Soccer Club, developing the soccer grounds with a shovel and wheelbarrow in hand. Mr Jeffery held various positions on the committee, played, managed and coached up until his death in 1951.

Coinciding with the renaming of the park Council installed commemorative signage showcasing the man behind the name and his contributions to the Kearsley community. Family member, Allan Creswell, shared a few words and helped with the official ribbon cutting.

Cessnock City Mayor, Councillor Bob Pynsent said he was proud to be a part of this process.

“It was great to be a part of the ribbon cutting surrounded by friends and family of this Kearsley icon. This sign will allow for future generations to see what a great community member Mr Jeffery was and how he contributed to this important community space.”
