Star War’s Kylo Ren and Wollongong Lord Mayor Cr Gordon Bradbery AM prepare for battle while Super Mario’s friend, Pauline, helps keep the peace.

More than 10,000 people, many dressed as their comic or pop culture heroine, hero or villain, are expected this year at Wollongong City Libraries’ pop culture festival, Comic Gong, on Saturday 11 May.

Wollongong’s original comic festival will see a colourful array of comics, cosplay, wrestling and children’s activities across the city centre at the Wollongong Town Hall, Arts Precinct, Wollongong Art Gallery and Wollongong Library.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said Comic Gong is “a great way to enjoy our pop culture in our city centre, whether it’s comics, cosplay, graphic novels, or even Lego robots. There’s also plenty for the family to see and do!” “Libraries of today offer a diverse range of activities and services. Comic Gong is a fun example of the different and varying resources that are available through our Libraries.

“I encourage everyone to pencil in Saturday 11 May, 10am- 4pm. There’s pinball and arcade games, a sausage sizzle and great kid’s activities. Wollongong Town Hall will be bustling with more than 70 artist, exhibitor and comic merchandise stalls. There will also be a new quiet space for anyone who needs a break.

“A visit to Comic Gong is a must and coming along as your favourite character makes it even more fun!”

Comic Gong, now in its seventh year, is organised by Wollongong City Libraries and has grown into a full-day event that attracts comic, anime, and pop culture lovers from all parts of NSW, Canberra and beyond.

The Arts Precinct will host sword fighting demonstrations, Rock’n’Roll Wrestling, light saber lessons and music by The Con Artists. Wollongong Library will have merchandise, a games floor, badge making, face painting, Project Bucephalus Lego robots and arcade games, including Dance Dance Revolution.

The Cosplay competitions will be held in the Wollongong Art Gallery from 11am. The Gallery will also feature two panel discussions on comic creation legends and living the fandom life, as well as a Draw-Off with Marcelo Baez and Queenie Chan.

All Comic Gongers are encouraged to share their photos on the Comic Gong Facebook page  tweet @Wollongong City, or share on Instagram @wollongonglibraries using the hashtag, #comicgong.
