Come and take part in Byron Shire’s SEASIDE SCAVENGE

Published on 22 March 2019

Byron Shire Council is partnering with Seaside Scavenge to host a community event designed to clean up our beaches and waterways.

This is the second time a Seaside Scavenge has been held in the Byron Shire and it combines a waterway clean-up campaign with a pre-loved clothing swap event

“Seaside Scavenges are held in other parts of Australia and are fun events where people collect litter that then becomes the currency they can use to ‘buy’ pre-loved clothes or other items that have been donated,” Kate Akkerman, Council’s Waste Education and Compliance Officer, said.

“Not only will our waterways and beaches be cleaned up but people get a chance to clean out their cupboards and get rid of clothes and other things they don’t use or need anymore.

“As the saying goes – someone’s trash is someone else’s treasure,” Ms Akkerman said.

“The seaside scavenge is a part of Council’s Butt Free Byron Shire campaign which is designed to not only get people to stop littering and smoking and dropping cigarette butts on the beaches and foreshore, but to educate them as well.

“We are hoping the community will come out and have a bit of fun while doing something really great for our environment,” Ms Akkerman said.

The Byron Shire Seaside Scavenge will be held on Saturday 23 March 2019 at Dening Park at Byron Bay, from 9am – 1pm.

Prizes will be awarded for things including most litter collected and weirdest item.

Stalls will be set up and there will also be educational talks and live music.
