New register details Bland Shire Council history
Bland Shire Council 13 Mar 2019

The public service records of every Councillor and General Manager to serve Bland Shire Council since 1906 are now available in a new register released by Council this week.

Launched to coincide with the 125th anniversary of Wyalong and West Wyalong, the Councillor and Shire Clerk Service Register includes the names and service records of all Presidents, Mayors, Vice Presidents and Deputy Mayors, Councillors, Shire Clerks and General Managers who have served Bland Shire Council since its formation.

The Shire of Bland was first declared in December 1906 after a temporary Council was formed six months earlier.

The Council remained in this state until September 1935 when a Provisional Council was formed to begin the process of amalgamation with the Municipality of Wyalong – which was first proclaimed in 1899 and operated out of Wyalong (Toppy) Hall.

The 54-page register also includes historic photographs of Councillors, Shire clerks and senior staff from throughout the Bland Shire’s rich history and will be continually updated as more information and material becomes available.

With the assistance of the Bland Historical Society, Council has been able to source and identify a number of photographs from 1910 to 1940.

However, there is a major gap in the collection for the period between 1950 to 1980 and anyone who has photographs of Councillors from this time is asked to contact Council so a copy can be made to update the register.
