Senior citizens make an invaluable contribution across the entire Tamworth region and in light of Seniors Week, Tamworth Regional Council is taking the opportunity to offer them the thanks and acknowledgment they deserve, through the annual Seniors Week awards ceremonies.

Senior citizens play an important role in community life as a whole. They make up a large proportion of volunteers in varying roles, actively participate on committees and often advocate on behalf of elderly people who need additional support.

Tamworth Region Mayor, Col Murray expressed his thanks to all senior citizens who spend their time helping others in the region.

“The most valuable thing that someone can give is their time. This week we especially acknowledge our senior citizens across the Tamworth region for the time, effort and generosity they provide to others in their day-to-life.

“Your contribution to the community, especially our elderly community, is very valuable and we would like to offer you a formal and well-earned thank you,” said Cr. Murray.

Today, senior citizens and volunteer groups were recognized in a ceremony held at the Tamworth Community Centre – the final of four Seniors Week celebrations across the region.

Individuals acknowledge for their contributions were Tory McCulloch, Vicki Evans, Judy Milne and Terrie Mower while the groups recognized included Co Care Inc., Tamworth Lions Club, Tamworth Parkinson’s Support Group, Moonbi Museum Committee, Oxley Community Transport Service Inc. and Tamworth PowerStation Museum.

The Senior Citizen of the Year award for 2019 was awarded to Tory McCulloch.

Tory has been an active volunteer within the community for most of her 89 years. She has been heavily involved in CWA branches across the wider region having served as President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer over the years and is also a supporter of St Peter’s Church. Tory’s most recent initiative was the contribution of knitted premature baby jackets and bonnets to the Tamworth Base Hospital Maternity Ward. Tory has been an inspiration for older people to face up to situations and take on other activities.

Tamworth Lions Club was awarded the Seniors Week Group of the Year Award for 2019. The club has held a concert for senior citizens every year since 1973. They organise everything from the entertainment, the venue, catering, transport for elderly people and gifts. It is a highlight event on many calendars.
