Recycled glass to pave the way for Resource Recovery Centre upgrade

Stage two of the upgrade to Byron Shire Council’s Resource Recovery Centre is underway.

The focus is on improving the public drop-off area where people leave their waste and recyclables.

Lloyd Isaacson, Team Leader Resource Recovery, said the new drop-off area will be much easier and safer to use with the installation of an innovative ‘Contained Waste’ drop-off bay system to make it easier for customers and staff to sort the items that can be recycled from rubbish that goes to land fill.

The bins will also allow staff to quickly identify hazardous items, such as illegally deposited asbestos, which can be immediately isolated and quarantined without having to shut down the Resource Recovery Centre.

“It will also make it easier for our staff to identify quality used goods that can be salvaged and sold in the second hand shop on-site,” Mr Isaacson said.

“The Resource Recovery Centre on Manse Road, known to many long term residents as the Myocum Tip, has been operating as a landfill and transfer station for more than 40 years so to now have it upgraded to focus on recycling is a significant change in the way we view our waste,” he said.

“It’s also exciting that some of the glass that people in the Byron Shire put in their yellow recycling bins will be used in the construction of the new pavement.

“Our recycled glass goes to Lismore where it is crushed into a sand-type product that is then used to build road base,” Mr Isaacson said.

“We’re also exploring the use of recyclable waste product in the asphalt product to be used,” he said.

The second stage of the upgrade follows the construction of the MAF garden organics composting facility and will be completed by the end of November.

Due to the construction works taking place there will be changes to traffic operations on-site and delays. Customers are asked to be patient and follow the directions of staff.

When stage two works are completed the focus will shift to improvements to the garden waste and processing drop-off area and the relocation of the second hand shop.
