Council's plan to improve safety in the city's major parks has received a welcome boost, with the Federal Government committing $53,782 to assist with CCTV installation.

The funding was announced today by Member of Parkes, Mark Coulton, and has been committed under Round 2 of the Coalition’s $40 million Safer Communities Fund.

Council's General Manager, James Roncon, said the funding would reinforce Council's plans to provide lighting and security upgrades in Sturt and Patton Parks.

"Unfortunately we do have a recurring problem with vandals targeting our parks, and I think it's an issue that both Council and the broader community are quite concerned with," he said.

"We've committed $596,000 in the draft 2018/19 budget to install CCTV in our major parks, along with new and improved smart lighting.

"This funding will help offset some of that cost, and we're extremely grateful for the Government's support in making our parks safer.

“We remain committed to delivering smart solutions to the city’s challenges in line with our Smart Communities Framework, and we’ll continue to look for any funding streams that can help us make Broken Hill an even better place to live, work, play and invest.”
