Published on 21 December 2023

Suzie Croston has played a vital role in the Wembley Theatre Company for 13 years, leaving an indelible mark on the local arts scene.

From enhancing visual spectacles to managing backstage crews, Suzie's journey began in 2010 after attending a performance of Aladdin. Inspired by the show, she reached out to Director Bryce Manning, offering her artistic talents and evolving from a novice painter to a versatile force in set design, costumes, and beyond.

For Suzie, volunteering is an extension of her identity, seamlessly blending her lifelong passion for painting and creating with collaborative efforts. She finds fulfillment in negotiating with cast and crew, describing the experience as cathartic and emotionally satisfying.

Suzie's involvement extends beyond backstage work; she fearlessly takes on leading roles in productions, juggling behind-the-scenes responsibilities while performing on stage. Despite the stress, she embraces the unique perspective it offers, playing multiple roles in the creative process.

Recalling fond memories, Suzie shares standout moments, including creating a wooden oven for Mother Goose alongside Director Bryce Manning, revealing his limited woodworking skills but cherishing the time spent bonding. Another memorable experience involved a group of deaf individuals interpreting a show using sign language, highlighting the power of theatre to connect with diverse audiences.

As Suzie's curtain call approaches with the Wembley Theatre Company, her story becomes a testament to the transformative power of volunteering. From a keen painter to a theatrical force, Suzie's dedication, creativity, and passion continue to illuminate the stage, leaving an enduring impact on the Cambridge community and beyond.
