Albany sportsmen and women were celebrated at the Wellington & Reeves Albany Sportsperson of the Year Awards last week, officially recognising the accomplishments of Albany’s local athletes.

The prestigious awards night honoured efforts and achievements from the 2023 calendar year, garnering an impressive response of 77 nominees across the four categories.

Athletes could be nominated for the Retravision Junior Sportsperson of the Year, Castlehow Senior Sportsperson of the Year, Sound Life Veteran Sportsperson of the Year, or the Wellington & Reeves Sportsperson of the Year.

All award entries were evaluated based on their level and intensity of their respective competitions, as well as their demonstrated individual performance and contributions to the local community.

Athletics champion Demi Burns won the Retravision Junior Sportsperson of the Year Award for her exceptional talent and dedication to her sport. Her notable achievements include winning the Western Australian Champion title in the 400-metre sprint and securing bronze in the 200-metre sprint.

Soccer player Connor Bunce took out the title of Castlehow Senior Sportsperson of the Year for his remarkable performance throughout the year, particularly at the National Para Football Championships where he was named Player of the Tournament.

Shooting legend Steven Hurley won the Sound Life Senior Sportsperson of the Year for his outstanding achievements, including multiple gold medals in both state and international competitions.

Albany ex-local Darcy Cameron took out the top gong and received the inaugural Wellington & Reeves Albany Sportsperson of the Year Award for his exceptional contribution to Australian Rules Football, notably leading his team to victory as AFL Grand Final Winners in 2023.

Mayor Greg Stocks congratulated the nominees and winners for their achievements.

"The return of the Wellington & Reeves Albany Sportsperson of the Year Awards underscores the resilience and spirit of our community, he said.

“It's a testament to the unwavering dedication of our local athletes, who continue to inspire us with their passion and commitment to excellence.”
