Albany’s Bicentenary seeks ambitious creative projects

Artists and arts organisations have the chance to present ambitious creative projects for inclusion in Albany’s 2026 Bicentenary.

The City of Albany has launched an expression of interest process to identify projects, events or initiatives that can be part of the Bicentenary program.

It presents an opportunity to tell Albany’s story in unique ways, showcasing the significance it has within Western Australia from its ancient Menang-Noongar history to the arrival of other cultures and the thriving multi-cultural community it is today.

The City intends to curate a 12-month destination event program for the Bicentenary that encompasses far-reaching, exciting, engaging, and must-see projects that evoke a sense of pride and place within the community.

Curating the program is the next key stage in planning for the Bicentenary, following the extensive community engagement project undertaken last year to identify the community’s vision and themes through the development of the Bicentenary Strategic Plan.

Mayor of Albany Dennis Wellington said 2026 presents a significant opportunity for Albany to reflect on its part, recognise the present and look to the future.

“We want everyone to be part of the Bicentenary and to bring us all together as a community,” Mayor Wellington said.

“This will be one of the biggest exercises we have ever undertaken and our aim as a community is to redefine the approach to contemporary place anniversaries and set the benchmark for cultural recognition and reconciliation.

“We’re very excited about the Bicentenary and look forward to receiving inspiring and ambitious proposals through this expression of interest process.”

Expressions of interest are open until 8 May 2023 and can be submitted at albany.wa.gov.au.
