Bicentenary draft strategic plan open for public comment

With the Bicentenary of Albany only three years away, the City of Albany has spent a number of months engaging with community in the development of the Bicentenary Strategic Plan

Albany’s Bicentenary in 2026 will be an opportunity to celebrate Albany’s history, culture and heritage through stories, projects and initiatives that delve into the dawn of Western Australia.

The Bicentenary Strategic Plan outlines the City’s commitment to ensuring the Bicentenary is co-designed and co-decided with the community.

Consultations and workshops have uncovered more than 1,000 ideas from locals, businesses, organisations, young people, senior residents and the local Menang community that prepare for 2026.

Community is invited to provide comment on the draft Plan, which seeks to walk together and reflect our thriving community in a way that is more inclusive than place anniversaries of the past.

City of Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said the Bicentenary Strategic Plan epitomises the essence of collaboration.

“By encouraging our whole community to become involved with the Bicentenary we are able to reflect authentically on Albany’s deep history, celebrate the thriving, multicultural community Albany has become and establish a strong foundation for the City’s future,” he said.

“Our engagement has identified many exciting opportunities including small scale local events and commemorative ideas, through to legacy focused initiatives and significant events that will attract national and international audiences.

“Albany and Western Australia will be on show as a place that recognises and acknowledges its deep Menang Noongar history, celebrates all cultures and pursues unity.”

The City of Albany welcomes feedback on the draft Bicentenary Strategic Plan, which will be open for public comment until 9am on Monday 21 November.
