Press Release - Thank You to our Hay Run Heroes
Shire of Carnarvon 16 Feb 2022
Press Release  Thank You to our Hay Run Heroes

More than 340,000 hectares of land was destroyed as a result of the bushfires, due to high fuels loads from a record year of rainfall in 2021.  As a result pastoral station owners had the unenviable task of contemplating the fate of their livestock due to the destruction of valuable feed.

“In the true Aussie spirit, Nick McLarty, and his wife Edwina, stepped in to support our farmers. The incredible comradery that was displayed in getting together and helping out fellow farmers is to be commended and I am sure that the community and station owners would agree with my sentiments. It is the “Australian thing to do” to help out a mate and this is shown by all the people and organisations who assisted to transport the hay to Carnarvon, not to mention all those who helped out in the background” said the Shire President, Eddie Smith.  “And while we know they do not want any fuss or thanks, I know our community is very grateful for this amazing generosity” he said.

According to Mr McLarty, “We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy task, but there was no question, we had to do it.  I suggested to a mate that we send one truck up and it just went from there.  Once we started, the amount of support we received, and the backing of our project was incredible to say the least.”

What started with one truck, soon turned into six trucks, 14 Hay suppliers, seven transport companies, a donation of over 7000 litres of diesel and over 12,000kms of travelled road.  This mammoth hay run would not have been possible without more than 60 volunteers who assisted to get the 400 hay bales to the Gascoyne pastoralists.

“Carnarvon local businesses also showed support by way of parking up vehicles and providing accommodation.  The Shire would like to say a huge thank you to our own, we are very proud of you Carnarvon for showcasing your generous hospitality.” said CEO, Andrea Selvey.
