People visiting the Margaret River Region these school holidays are reminded to have accommodation organised prior to arrival. Short stays providers are reporting to be booked out for the majority of the summer months and there are no free camping options available. Shire of Augusta Margaret River Ranger Coordinator Naz Graue said her team has increased patrols in recent weeks and is taking a zero-tolerance approach. “Illegal camping in unmanaged localities typically results in the multitude of issues,” she said. “We often encounter illegal campfires, toilet waste, litter and food scraps. “There’s also instances where high value environmental areas have been damaged from the camp set up or vehicle movement. “It also occasionally comes with noise complaints and antisocial behaviour in larger camping groups.” Ms Graue said complaints of illegal campers often stemmed from local carparks, reserves, amenities and recreational facilities being made inaccessible to other users. “Augusta-Margaret River is a beautiful place to be in the summertime and we understand the desire to be here,” she said. “If you don’t have a place to stay though, please hold off your travels until such a time you can get accommodation. “We’d love to have you visit at that time.” Between 19 November 2021 and 8 December 2021, Rangers had issued 40 illegal camping infringements. Anyone wishing to report instance of illegal camping can contact Rangers on 97805695. Fines for illegal camping are $100 per person.
