WORKS REPORT – SEPT 2021

Observations on road conditions:

Weather has improved and most roads are drying out, although there are some still wet (like Whyatt Road).  The road construction team has worked weekends and public holidays to lay gravel on flood affected gravel roads in the Shire, initial priority started on nominated bus routes, then category one roads, and will now move to lesser category two roads, three roads and four roads to prepare them for harvest over the next few weeks.

UPCOMING WORKS IN OCTOBER

The upgrade of Kukerin Rd to a sealed road commenced in early  October, the works consist of a 10.4km gravel re-sheet starting just north of the current bitumen just north of Crosby Rd until the Shire Boundary on Adams Rd and some of Peterson Rd at the intersection. The works have been split into two packages, the southern package being done now, with the northern package to follow in early 2022. The works are being done by MCC Civil Contractors. Gravel re-sheets on East Rd and Ryan Rd will be done in October.

The Shire has a gravel road network of 1,200kms that requires constant monitoring to maintain the network. To do this in a practical manner the shire is split in to 3 zones being West , Central and East. Each zone is allocated a maintenance grader that generally grades the roads following a set rotation and circuit. The main local roads will have a summer and winter grading each year and some of the lesser used minor road will be graded once or on as needs basic.

To reduce the risk to the road users we inspect on a regular basis but we can’t be everywhere all the time, which is why we appreciate the assistance from the public to report to the shire (phone, in person or website) any road hazard they may come across in their travels. For plant efficiencies we try to stay with the circuit for our graders, so we may not be able to fix the problem straight away however, for school bus routes we will attend as soon as possible.
