Friday, 25 June: The City of Cockburn’s 2021-22 Budget has been adopted by Council, with Cockburn households continuing to pay some of the lowest rates in Perth, despite ongoing economic challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. opens in a new window The budget incorporates a small rate rise of 1.5 per cent, with Cockburn’s average residential improved rate of $1,596 for 2021-22 (inclusive of concessions) making it the lowest among neighbouring councils, while also maintaining a COVID-19 concession.   Either Perth Airport or Jandakot Airport, in the City of Cockburn, could be chosen as a location for a 1,000-bed purpose-built quarantine facility after the federal government ticked off on the sites. opens in a new window Prime Minister Scott Morrison has told WA Premier Mark McGowan he had received advice suggesting land at either of the airports would be suitable for a COVID-19 quarantine centre.   Thursday, 24 June: Western Australian civil contracting firm Ertech Pty Ltd has been selected for the design and delivery of a major wharf upgrade at the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) in Henderson. opens in a new window The project will see the existing AMC Berth 1 extended by approximately 153 metres and include the upgrade of existing services on AMC wharves 1, 2 and 3.

Wednesday, 23 June: The City of Cockburn has welcomed the State Government announcement that it will seek expressions of interest from private investors to potentially buy and redevelop the abandoned South Fremantle Power Station. opens in a new window The expressions of interest phase closes on July 2, 2021. Tuesday, 22 June: Balloons have been given the flick by the City of Cockburn, with council voting to prohibit their use at City-run events. opens in a new window The City of Cockburn Wastewise Events Policy bans the sale, use or release of balloons at all City-run events. However, balloons are permitted at City-approved events if they are only used inside and not sold or released into the environment. The public are permitted to use balloons at private events on City land, provided they are not sold or released. The City hopes the public will dispose of this waste appropriately. The purpose of this policy is to reduce waste from events within the District and to encourage effective resource recovery. This will reduce resource consumption, litter generation and threats to local wildlife.
