Say g’day to Parks Maintenance Coordinator Steve O’Brien, one of our resident green thumbs who leads the City’s park maintenance crew.

The City of Swan is home to many natural assets and Steve’s dedicated team is responsible for tree and weed management across the City’s 1,043 square kilometre area, as well as mowing the local sports fields and reserves.

“My passion for horticulture grew at a young age. In high school I studied biology where I broadened my understanding and knowledge, before commencing formal education,” Steve said.

Steve also spent ten years in the Australian Defence Force where he was part of the 10th Light Horse; a career decision he made to gain important life skills and lessons.

“During this time, I developed leadership skills, built resilience and quickly learnt how to deal with and adapt to a variety of high-pressure scenarios,” he said.

“These skills have definitely assisted in my current and previous roles, particularly with leadership as well as prioritising and effectively using resources.”

With more than 20 years’ experience in Local Government and 14 months at the City, Steve said there was lots to enjoy about working at Swan.

“The City is definitely a leader when it comes to achieving outcomes and identifying efficient ways to service the community,” he said.

“We foster a strong team environment where our staff have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience and work across a variety of areas, and not just one specific area.”

The City is currently seeking a General Hand/Arbor and an experienced Supervisor Arborist to join the team. More information is available on our careers page.
