Live Local Month, held throughout November, has been deemed a success with a large turnout at local events as well as a groundswell of support for offers and competitions promoting local businesses.

Run as part of the Local-Is-More initiative, Live Local Month was part of a push to encourage locals to choose, think and support local first, in what has been a challenging year for many local businesses and small traders.

Live Local Month saw over 35 events take place throughout November, including favourites such as the Margaret River Farmers Markets and Town Square Markets, as well as feature events including the Live Local Night Market and the Festival of Forgotten Skills.

With a number of businesses putting forward special offers for the month as well as weekly competitions to win local prizes, Live Local Month has prompted wider awareness and discussion around the benefits of choosing local first.

The initiative is a combined effort between the Shire of Augusta Margaret River, Margaret River Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MRCCI), Transition Margaret River, Augusta Chamber of Commerce, Margaret River Regional Producers Association and Cowaramup Business Association.

Shire of Augusta Margaret River Sustainable Economy Officer Saul Cresswell said Live Local Month had been a conversation starter and a great prompt for people to consider the flow on effect of their decisions, especially in the lead up to Christmas.

“Live Local Month saw a great turnout of people supporting local events, local businesses, and local talent” he said. “The lead up to Christmas is a great opportunity to make sustainable purchasing decisions, and choose authentic, local gifts with less transport emissions.”

“Local businesses here in Augusta Margaret River have some very unique offerings,” he said. “We encourage locals to celebrate that by choosing local goods, services and experiences this Christmas that truly reflect the uniqueness of our region and keep money circulating locally.”
