Cambridge joins Blue Tree Project

The Town of Cambridge has selected and painted two prominent deceased trees as part of the Blue Tree Project.

The aim of this project is to encourage people to start the difficult conversations and open up if they are suffering from depression and/or anxiety.

The trees that have been selected are on Jubilee Park in City Beach and the bushland adjacent to the Town’s Administration Centre, Floreat, visible from Oceanic Drive.

The Town of Cambridge Mayor Keri Shannon said that during a time of heightened anxiety and worry with the current pandemic and its aftermath, it is important to draw attention to the mental, as well as the physical, well-being of members of our community.

“Poor mental health is something that does not always have obvious signs that friends or family can see or pick up on,” she said.

“Most suffer in silence.

“The Blue Trees, amongst the green ones in a forest or in places where it is the only tree, are prominent and provide a message of hope reminding us it is ok not to be ok.

“I hope to see more Blue Trees across the Town as we all need hope at the moment.

“The eye-catching trees in Cambridge will be a reminder to people to ask one another ‘Are you Ok’ or to help people to speak up about how they are feeling.

“If anyone is overwhelmed with anxiety or depressed we encourage them to seek professional help by contacting Beyond Blue  1300 224 636 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.”

The project originated in the community of Mukinbudin in the Western Australian Wheatbelt, and now currently has 427 Blue Trees across WA, the nation and overseas.
