Media Release - Rate Freeze following Special council meeting
Shire of Carnarvon 2 Apr 2020
MEDIA RELEASE RATE FREEZE FOLLOWING SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING THURSDAY 2 APRIL 2020

Shire of Carnarvon Council held a special council meeting today, which resulted in resolution to freeze the rate increase for 2020/21, consideration of rates relief options and reviewing of fees and charges.

The resolution was made following the concerns from community members and businesses, due to the financial impact COVID-19 has had on the community. As result, the council also adopted a Rates Hardship Policy.

The Rate Hardship Policy supports those who have difficulties or experiencing short-term financial hardship due to COVID-19 and allow more flexible arrangements for the payment of rates.

Shire President, Eddie Smith said we recognise that many ratepayers are already experiencing financial hardship due to COVID-19. We respect and anticipate the probability that additional financial difficulties will arise when their rates are received.

“Hopefully this should provide some reassurance to those community members and businesses, that your council are listening and supporting you during these hard times,” he said.

The Shire will also reinforce the Buy Local Policy and Small Business Friendly Payment Terms to support local businesses during these difficult times.

A Recovery Plan is also being drafted, which will help the Shire respond effectively to the COVID- 19 Pandemic.
