The Shire of Broome celebrated Australia Day in style on January 26, with residents coming out in their droves to attend the festivities at Town Beach.

The community rallied to celebrate all the things that make Broome and Australia great, with an inclusive and welcoming environment at the Town Beach breakfast.

A total of 23 proud Broome residents became Australian citizens and were welcomed by deputy Shire president Desiree Male.

The Shire also announced its annual community award winners, with a select group of selfless individuals and organisations rewarded.

The Broome Volunteer Fire Brigade won the Community Citizen of the Year Award for a Group or Event.

Jesse Evans claimed the Community Citizen of the Year for a Person under 25 and Eunice Yu was awarded the Community Citizen of the Year accolade for her significant contribution to Broome.

Shire of Broome president Harold Tracey said the Australia Day event was a community favourite.

“Congratulations to all our new Australian citizens and thank you to our community heroes that were awarded for their dedication to making Broome a better place to live,” he said.

“I’d also like to thank the local Lions, Lioness and Rotary Clubs, the Roebuck Lodge and Mens Shed for making the Town Beach breakfast a hit in 2020 once again.”

The Australia Day celebrations also allowed the community to take advantage of the new children’s playground at Town Beach.

Local youngsters were all smiles as they tested out the swings, slides and explored the new space.

The Shire worked in partnership with local company Roadline to have the playground ready in time for Australia Day, while a Lotterywest grant helped make the project a reality.
