(19/6/2019) Freo embraces NAIDOC Week celebrations
City of Fremantle 19 Jun 2019

The City of Fremantle is set to acknowledge and celebrate NAIDOC Week with a series of community events to honour local Aboriginal history, culture and achievements.

Held from 7–14 July, this year’s NAIDOC Week theme – Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together for a shared future – encourages all Australians to walk with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in a movement for a better future.

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said the City strongly supported NAIDOC Week each year, and encouraged residents to get involved and take part in the various events and activities.

“NAIDOC Week also provides an opportunity for all of us to support our local Aboriginal community and reflect on our reconciliation journey,” Mayor Pettitt said.

“This year will be a memorable NAIDOC Week for the City as we move towards receiving final endorsement from Council and Reconciliation Australia for our draft Walyalup Reconciliation Action Plan.”

The City’s NAIDOC Week celebrations kick off with a free opening event at Fremantle PCYC on Sunday 7 July from 10am–2pm. A popular event each year, there will be Aboriginal dancing, choir music, face painting, a photo exhibition, bush tucker tastings, damper making, community stalls and more for the whole family to enjoy.

Across town, the Walyalup Aboriginal Cultural Centre is hosting special NAIDOC Week activities throughout the week. The program runs from 10–13 July and includes a school holiday colouring-in class, community canvas collaboration, Aboriginal face painting, activity workstations and a kids Nyoongar language workshop. To book in for these activities, visit the City’s website.

During the week, people can check out the striking and educational book displays celebrating all-things NADIOC Week at Fremantle Library and The Meeting Place.
