Upon a recent visit to the North of France, Mayor of Albany Dennis Wellington accepted an offer to bring the We Were Australian In Peronné exhibition to Albany for Anzac Day 2019.

This bilingual French-English exhibition features objects from the museum’s collection such as trench art, and is based on photographs that supplement the testimonies of Australian soldiers and addresses all aspects of the conflict from the violence of war to daily life, relationship with civilians, death and the return home.

A short 10-minute film will also be on display titled The Australians Final Campaign in 1918 which contains actual footage of Australians in the Western Front and their exploits during the final months of the war.

Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said the exhibition will bring a new perspective on the history of Peronne as well as offering a unique experience through viewing the short film and witnessing the photographs.

“The experience offered through We Were Australian in Peronne is one which fits seamlessly into Albany’s heritage, history and culture while providing the community with an insight into the life of our soldiers,” he said.

Presented by the National Anzac Centre, the exhibition will be displayed in the Married Quarters at Princess Royal Fortress Military Museum from the April 18 to November 17 this year.
