Citizen of the Year Awards - City of Armadale

The City of Armadale is proud to support the Australia Day Council WA Community Citizen of the Year Awards which recognise excellence in a number of areas including education, health fundraising, charitable and volunteer services, business, sport, arts, the environment and social inclusion.

Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones OAM, JP presented this year’s winners with framed certificates at a special ceremony hosted by the City as part of its Australia Day celebrations on Saturday 26 January.

“The awards provide the City with the opportunity to acknowledge significant contributions to the local community by individuals and groups. The winners have made a noteworthy difference and deserve to be recognised for their contributions to our community”, he said.

Andrew Clift, winner of the Citizen of the Year category, has provided outstanding service to the community for the past 34 years through his involvement with the Armadale Volunteer Fire and Rescue Brigade.

There was a tie this year for the Community Citizen of the Year – Senior between Christine Bloomer and Yvonne Waddell, both recognised for their outstanding contributions in the community.

Eighty year old Christine Bloomer has not slowed down in her commitment to volunteering with active involvement in the Roleystone Family Centre, St Christopher’s Anglican Church and Animal Companions. Christine also established a call back service for the elderly and is part of a team that transports elderly patients to medical appointments.

Yvonne Waddell is an amazing and inspirational role model for the community. Since 1975 she delivered outstanding service through her positions as a teacher at local schools, a Chaplain and State Commissioner for Girls Brigade, Sunday school teacher, and her involvement with the Roleystone Hockey Club and Royal Lifesaving Society.

Keith Thomas-Wurth, President of the Roleystone Theatre, accepted the Active Citizenship Award for the group’s outstanding contributions to the community for over 85 years. The much loved local theatre group provides a forum for people of all ages and abilities to participate in live stage theatre and also gain experience in a range of career opportunities such as lighting, sound engineering, set design, carpentry, PR and marketing, costume design and more.

This year the City did not receive any nominations for the category Citizen of the Year – Youth.
