Repair Lab phenomenon joins Lake Claremont Celebrations
Town of Claremont 23 Sep 2018
Town of Claremont will be promoting sustainable living at the annual Celebrate Lake Claremont community event. A Repair Lab will be among the range of sustainable workshops and activities on offer at the event. Celebrate Lake Claremont is a plastic free event. Perth’s sixth Repair Lab will be held at Town of Claremont’s annual Celebrate Lake Claremont event this month, promoting sustainable living and the reduce, reuse, recycle message.

Repair Labs, which began in Perth last October, gather volunteers who work with the community to assess and fix broken items, and give some insight on how to repair other things around the house and therefore reduce waste.

Repair Lab Co-Founder and Swanbourne local Wilma Van Boxtel said the labs help to teach the community that there is more than just recycling or buying new, you can also reuse.

“People can bring along their broken bikes, toys, small household items, jewellery and clothing to our lab at Celebrate Lake Claremont for our Repair Lab Volunteers to repair,” Ms Van Boxtel said. “As there is minimal electricity at the event, we request no corded electrical items for this Repair Lab.”

Repair Lab volunteers will be joined by the local Claremont Buy Nothing group, where the community can donate good condition, unwanted household items such as books, toys, games, clothes and kitchen items or pickup something special for themselves from the contributed items.

Mayor Jock Barker said the annual Celebrate Lake Claremont event would host a great range of workshops and activities for children and adults to aid the community in living a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly life.

“There will be workshops on the wonderful world of native bees and worm farming for the garden enthusiasts as well as a range of children’s activities such as decorating your own recycled bag, working with wood and other nature craft activities,” Mayor Barker said.

“The event helps to remind us why it’s important to live sustainably so that our beautiful environment is preserved for generations to come.”

Celebrate Lake Claremont is a plastic free event and the community are encouraged to bring along their drink bottles to fill up at the refillable drinks stations and reusable coffee cups to use at the coffee cart.

“We hope to avoid filling rubbish bins with unnecessary, single use waste such as disposable cups, straws, bottles, plates and cutlery - much of which ultimately ends up in landfill,” Mayor Barker said.

The Celebrate Lake Claremont event will be held from 11am-2pm on Sunday, 16 September 2018 at the Stirling Road entrance to Lake Claremont.
